Perspective Shift Across Modalities

چکیده

Languages offer various ways to present what someone said, thought, imagined, felt, and so on from their perspective. The prototypical example of a perspective-shifting device is direct quotation. In this review we define perspective shift in terms indexical shift: A quotation like “Selena ‘Oh, I don't know.’” involves because the first-person ‘I’ refers Selena, not actual speaker. We then discuss variety noncanonical modality-specific devices: role sign language, quotatives spoken free indirect discourse written point-of-view visual language. show that these devices permit complex mixed forms which may involve nonlinguistic gestural as well components.

Automated scoring across different modalities

In this paper we investigate how well the systems developed for automated evaluation of written responses perform when applied to spoken responses. We compare two state of the art systems for automated writing evaluation and a state of the art system for evaluating spoken responses. We find that the systems for writing evaluation achieve very good performance when applied to transcriptions of s...

Chimpanzees process structural isomorphisms across sensory modalities

Evolution has shaped animal brains to detect sensory regularities in environmental stimuli. In addition, many species map one-dimensional quantities across sensory modalities, such as conspecific faces to voices, or high-pitched sounds to bright light. If basic patterns like repetitions and identities are frequently perceived in different sensory modalities, it could be advantageous to detect c...

Pigeons integrate past knowledge across sensory modalities

Advanced inferring abilities that are used for predator recognition and avoidance have been documented in a variety of animal species that produce alarm calls. In contrast, evidence for cognitive abilities that underpin predation avoidance in nonalarm-calling species is restricted to associative learning of heterospecific alarm calls and predator presence. We investigated cognitive capacities t...

Perceptual load interacts with stimulus processing across sensory modalities.

According to perceptual load theory, processing of task-irrelevant stimuli is limited by the perceptual load of a parallel attended task if both the task and the irrelevant stimuli are presented to the same sensory modality. However, it remains a matter of debate whether the same principles apply to cross-sensory perceptual load and, more generally, what form cross-sensory attentional modulatio...

Inconsistent emotion recognition deficits across stimulus modalities in Huntington׳s disease.

BACKGROUND Recognition of negative emotions is impaired in Huntington׳s Disease (HD). It is unclear whether these emotion-specific problems are driven by dissociable cognitive deficits, emotion complexity, test cue difficulty, or visuoperceptual impairments. This study set out to further characterise emotion recognition in HD by comparing patterns of deficits across stimulus modalities; notably...
